POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sustainability/ESG Writer/Storyteller/Content Creator is responsible for transforming concepts into highly compelling content for a variety of audiences and stakeholders. This role is a key content contributor  who interviews, researches, drafts initial content in various formats (including  key messages, long form writing, presentations, press releases, etc.) , and is comfortable writing, editing and proofing for  internal and external communications.

While our firm provides a wide variety of writing and editing support, this position is focused on content development for our growing sustainability/environmental, social and governance (ESG) practice. Specific knowledge of environmental issues such as climate change, social topics such as diversity, equity and inclusion, corporate governance and ethics matters, sustainability and ESG standards and ratings is expected, if not critical. This is not an entry-level position, nor is it appropriate for an experienced writer who wants to learn about sustainability/ESG. We are looking for an experienced sustainability/ESG writer and editor who can be a significant content contributor/leader from the start.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with colleagues to strategize on objectives and goals of engagement. .
  • Conduct interviews in a people-focused, engaging manner to extract key points (“reporter mindset”) and gain the insights necessary to develop initial drafts of sustainability/ESG strategies, reports, proposals, materiality assessment findings and related communications materials.
  • Edit, proofread and enhance copy created by clients and colleagues.
  • Assist staff with the development of written, printed or online content, which effectively communicates with various audiences, including investors, employees, customers, communities and others.
  • Move flexibly among various types of writing: business, , internal communications, print, web, etc.
  • Brainstorm, draft, and edit thought leadership pieces.
  • Edit others’ work for content and grammar.
  • Other areas of responsibility for writing or review of content:
    • White papers, blog posts, research summaries
    • Case studies
    • Press releases
    • Presentations created for client meetings
    • Client education pieces
    • Scripts, speeches for clients
    • Miscellaneous projects
COMPETENCIES:
  • Experience in a journalism/reporting role, communications or related area with demonstrated ability to carry out responsibilities.
  • Experience in at least one of the following writing specialties: environmental journalism, sustainability/ESG reporting, or ESG consulting and content development.
  • Natural curiosity about business, how it works and the impact of a changing economic and sustainability landscape on our clients’ businesses.
  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Journalism, English, Sustainability, Environmental Communications, or equivalent experience for at least six years.
  • Ability to create content on a wide range of topics related to business performance, sustainability, environmental topics, employee engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion, community development, economic development, etc.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills; enjoys working in a collaborative environment.
  • Understanding of writing styles and content that is appropriate for both print and digital applications.
  • Proven writing ability and high attention to detail.
  • Proven editing ability and experience developing and maintaining copy standards, and willingness to accept editorial direction from others; and give editorial feedback to others as needed.
  • Ability to work with diverse teams with varying writing abilities to produce high-quality content.
  • Willingness to work under deadline pressure to complete assignments.
  • Excellent grammar, spelling and punctuation skills, including understanding of MLA and AP styles.
  • Basic understanding of communications tools and strategies for publication.
  • Strong project management skills.

  • Demonstrate understanding of financial concepts at the project level, including budgeting, pricing structure (hourly vs. retainer accounts) and profitability.
  • Understand and participate in agency billing and invoicing process.
  • Record and submit time on a daily basis.
  • Follow firm’s financial procedures.
