Art of the Letter
A former colleague of mine, Joe Galbreath, recently created the screen print below out of digital letter forms. It is a great reminder of just how powerful and beautiful type can be - even a single letter.
For more information on the print go to Massivegraphic.com.

Flower Power
Sometimes the most addictive web sites are those with no real productive value at all. Flower Garden is one of those sites that just represents a cool use of Flash technology. It won't make you smarter but you will enjoy yourself. Experiment with the different results you get by clicking or just holding down the mouse.

When the design is left out of logo design
Being a big Cleveland sports fan, I spend a lot of time at the different team venues. Over the last two years, both Gund Arena (home of the Cavaliers) and The Jacobs Field (home of the Indians) have had corporations buy the naming rights to the facilities. I have no problem with this as it is part of professional sports these days. My problem is what these companies, Quicken Loans and Progressive Insurance, did with the logos for the facilities.
Gund Arena had a nice, solid type treatment for a logo that looked excellent as part of the skyline. I don't even know what to say about the new Quicken Loans Arena logo except that it looks like they took three or four ideas and just smashed them together - logo design by committee.

Jacobs Field changed from a logo that incorporated the overall feel of the ballpark with the colors of the team to The Progressive Field logo which feels like it was thrown together just in time for the press conference announcing the name change. Now everywhere you look in the park light blue is clashing with dark blue and you are confronted with a mark that seems oddly disconnected from its environment.

It's painful to see these results given the branding opportunity that was at hand. I can't help but think that design did not have a big enough seat at the table during the whole renaming/re-branding process. Instead of logos that reflect the companies and the teams and the city, we got logos that look oddly out of place - like bad packaging.

Inspiration - where do you get it?
Like many people - an extremely important part of my life is music. I am a huge fan of live music and I find that a good show can be really inspiring. I recently had such such an experience seeing the band Wilco. I've liked their music for a while but seeing them live raised my appreciation to a new level. It's great to see artists performing their craft so well. Great song writing, really tight playing...providing that natural high that sometimes only music can provide. Seeing a band like this makes we want to be better at what I do.

Beautiful Consumer Waste
Chris Jordon's work is amazing. Great examples of a picture is worth a thousand words. He takes powerful statistics and creates images that bring the numbers to life. A few of my favorite examples that deal with electronic consumer waste are below. I would recommend viewing his most recent exhibition, Running the Numbers. As creative folk we are often asked to visually simplify the complex. These pieces show this accomplished in an awe-inspiring way.
